About this event
In today’s changing work environment, many people in science communications are considering going freelance, or doing a mix of freelance and permanent work. But getting going as a freelancer can be daunting. We’re hoping to gain some insight into this way of working by speaking to three freelancers working in the science communications field about how and why they decided to go freelance, the benefits and challenges of a different working pattern, and advice they can lend to others in the field either considering to go into freelance work or a bit of both.

The format will be a 1 hour online event, where each panellist will talk for 5 minutes about their background and current projects or ways of working. There will be an opportunity for members to ask questions to the panel, and we hope participants will go away with some more intel and advice on all things freelance science comms!

Panel:

  • Katrina Wesencraft is a freelance science writer and content creator who works part time as a research communications specialist at the University of Edinburgh.
  • Henry Scowcroft is a freelance communications consultant, writer and editor. He was previously in the news team at Cancer Research UK before heading up communications at Alzheimer’s Research UK.
  • Sam Burne James is a freelance comms and PR professional working in both STEM and other areas. Until 2019 he was a b2b journalist covering charities, PR, recruitment and other topics.

Chair:

  • Inês Crespo is a freelance Senior Communications Specialist at FRESCI, Research Communications and Engagement Lead at the University of Glasgow, and Events Coordinator for Stempra.
